Current Passions

The ideas, technologies, and principles I'm most energised by right now.

AI Native Engineering

Leading the transformation to AI native engineering teams. Reshaping how engineers work with AI tools, rethinking team structures, and building the culture that makes it sustainable.

People-First Leadership

Deepening the practice of servant leadership in engineering. Building environments where engineers can do their best work, grow their skills, and genuinely enjoy what they do.

Engineering Culture & Community

Building and sharing practices for engineering culture at scale. Communities of Practice, knowledge sharing, and creating spaces where engineering leaders support each other.

Leadership & Current Focus

Current leadership roles, approach, and the principles that shape how I build teams and culture.

“The best engineering leaders are those who serve their teams, not the other way around.”
Mar 2026 — Present

Head of AI & Platform Engineering

PA Media Group
  • Driving AI-native engineering transformation, embedding AI into how teams think, build, and ship
  • Defining the AI and platform strategy for the UK’s national news agency, serving news, sport, data, imagery, and video at scale, 24/7/365
  • Building the engineering culture and platform foundations for the next generation of media technology

The next frontier of engineering leadership is navigating the AI transformation. Not just adopting tools, but reshaping how teams think, build, and deliver.

Apr 2022 — Mar 2026

Head of Engineering

PA Media Group
  • Led engineering across 5 portfolio companies with teams in UK, Malta, and India
  • Drove squad-based transformation, reshaping how teams are structured and empowered
  • Delivered the Racing Data API, a critical commercial product for the business
  • Built a culture of psychological safety, autonomy, and continuous improvement

Leading across multiple companies and countries taught me that culture scales through trust and clarity of purpose, not through process and control.

Apr 2017 — Apr 2022

Principal Software Engineer

PA Media (Press Association)
  • Led 16 engineers across multiple squads delivering media technology products
  • Architected cloud-native image pipeline, reducing processing from 5 minutes to 30 seconds (10x speedup)
  • Introduced Terraform-based infrastructure as code across the engineering org
  • Founded and ran the engineering Community of Practice for knowledge sharing

The biggest technical wins come from empowering teams with the right tools and autonomy. The image pipeline transformation happened because engineers felt safe to challenge the status quo.

Career Journey

The roles that built a foundation of technical expertise and leadership capability.

Mar 2016 — Mar 2017

Development Team Lead

William Hill
  • Led the Single Wallet project spanning teams across UK, Gibraltar, and Israel
  • Delivered complex compliance requirements for regulated gambling markets
  • Coordinated cross-site engineering delivery across multiple time zones

Leading across geographies for the first time taught me that alignment and communication are what drive the real value.

Mar 2015 — Mar 2016

Senior Java Developer

William Hill
  • Led a team of 5 engineers building the Italian regulatory REST API
  • Introduced CI/CD pipelines and automated testing practices to the team
  • Delivered against tight regulatory deadlines for the Italian gambling market

Discovered that introducing testing and CI culture is as much about changing minds as changing tooling. The human side of technical change.

Aug 2012 — Mar 2015

Software Engineer

Press Association
  • Built the Football Data API serving real-time sports data at scale
  • Led migration of legacy systems to modern architectures
  • Delivered the Olympics API for major sporting event coverage
  • Worked extensively with SportsML data standards

Working on high-profile live events taught me that reliability under pressure comes from preparation, not heroics. Great systems are built by great teams.

Jul 2010 — Aug 2012

Junior Software Developer

Press Association
  • Built systems for sports data delivery across multiple platforms
  • Wrote commercial football data contract specifications
  • First exposure to large-scale data systems and real-time processing

The early years taught me that curiosity and humility are a developer's greatest assets. Every codebase has something to teach you.

Foundations

Education, research, and early experiences that underpin everything else.

Aug 2007 — Feb 2011

Postgraduate Researcher in Network Security

Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU)
  • Researched System-of-Systems security for crisis management scenarios
  • Published 5 peer-reviewed academic papers on security in distributed systems
  • Taught programming to undergraduate students as a lab instructor

Academic research taught me rigour and the ability to communicate complex ideas clearly. Skills that continue to prove invaluable in engineering leadership.

2003 — 2007

BSc Hons Computer Science

University of Hull

Strong academic foundation in software engineering, algorithms, and computer science fundamentals.

Academic Research

Peer-Reviewed Publications

System-of-Systems Security Research
  • State-of-the-Art in System-of-Systems Security for Crisis Management
  • A Survey of Security in the System-of-Systems Domain
  • System-of-Systems Boundary Check in a Public Event Scenario
